The Master Of The Cape Breton Fiddle

Buddy MacMaster - Master of the Cape Breton Fiddle

A documentary portrait of perhaps Cape Breton's finest traditional musician and his Cape Breton style of Celtic fiddle music.

Cape Breton Island has been the stronghold of Gaelic culture in the New World. Here, the old Highland style of fiddling & step dancing has flourished. Buddy MacMaster is one of the most important players of this style of Celtic music.

The Island's natural beauty & Buddy's music, provide the natural backdrop for the insights of Archie Neil Chisholm, Sheldon MacInnis, Natalie MacMaster, Dave MacIsaac and the Master himself.

We see Buddy at his best, playing for the dancers at Glencoe Hall and in a duet with niece Natalie. The camera follows the master violinist through the Scottish Highlands, the land of his ancestors, to the mist covered mountains of the Isle of Skye, where he teaches a week-long workshop in the Cape Breton style of playing. Scotland and America's finest Scottish fiddler and teacher, Alasdair Fraser, explores the international significance of the softspoken gentleman from Judique and his vibrant style of music. The production finishes with a flourish,an uninterrupted set of great Buddy tunes.
