Music in the Blood

Music in the Blood

A documentary that follows the musical adventures of a group of fiddlers and stepdancers as they travel through the Outer Hebrides, teaching and playing their Cape Breton traditions. Featured are fiddlers Buddy MacMaster and Kinnon Beaton and stepdancers Willie Fraser and Mary Janet MacDonald.

From a review in the TV Guide:
"It's ironic that residents of Cape Breton Island, NS, have been keeping alive and celebrating their Scottish heritage for well over 100 years, while the Celtic traditions of fiddling and stepdancing were slowly disappearing (changing) in Scotland. The Ceolas Music Summer School in South Uist called on some of Cape Breton's finest musicians and dancers for help in reminding the Scots of their roots. A group of traditional Celtic performers from Cape Breton became traveling ambassadors, traveling across the Atlantic to teach and perform, with a film crew in tow to record the events. Filled with songs, stories, steps set against a rugged landscape, the documentary gives viewers a close look at Celtic culture in Nova Scotia and Scotland."
